Bridging the Gap: Guiding Principles on Your Path to Reconciliation (REGISTRATION NOW FULL)
Presented by Shani Gwin, Teneya Gwin, and Carola Cunningham in advance of the symposium Reconciliation and Resurgence: Heritage Practice in Post-TRC Edmonton
For this pre-symposium workshop taking place on Monday, March 2 at La Cite Francophone, Carola Cunningham, Teneya and Shani Gwin have put together a workshop that explores Indigenous worldviews, natural law, allyship, language, and ownership. The day will begin with an opening prayer and smudge before identifying the important relationship Indigenous peoples have with the land, their ancestors, and natural law. Attendees will be asked to question power, privilege, and meaningful allyship. The group will work together on deconstructing language used in the news, documents and other materials that build a narrative around First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people. The conversation will open up the power of language and how it can continue to colonize and oppress Indigenous people and communities. Afterward, the group will embark on a conversation around ownership and repatriation. At the end of the day, the group will close with a sharing circle and reflect on attendees’ takeaways from the workshop.
