On April 1st, 2016, communities from Edmonton and abroad gathered at the Santa Maria Goretti Centre with one aim: to explore the many sides and stories of the Charles Camsell Hospital site from its early days through to its decommissioning in 1996.
Elders, former patients, academics, as well as heritage and health professionals gave presentations and worked together in facilitated groups, all to increase our general understanding and think of ways this history can be accessed, shared and acknowledged. View the Summary Report and videos from the Symposium below.
After the symposium, it was apparent that more needed to be down to share stories, memories, and perspectives on the Charles Camsell Hospital. The Edmonton Heritage Council collaborated with mtset Productions to produce Camsell, a 13-minute documentary film featuring former patients, staff, and those connected to the hospital in myriad ways sharing their perspectives on reconciliation and the Camsell Hospital.

Camsell Documentary
The Charles Camsell Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta has a long and tangled history. Most people know it today as an abandoned hospital site in the Inglewood Community, just west of downtown, but for the patients and staff who worked and lived there, the Camsell is much more. Connections to the Camsell Hospital stretch back over 70 years and cover most of western Canada and the arctic and are layered with the colonial history of a segregated healthcare system for Indigenous People. What do you really know about the Camsell?
